The star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will be leading the side in the T20I series on their tour to South Africa, making him a frontrunner for the permanent captaincy role leading into next year's World Cup in West Indies and the United States.
The Western Australia all-rounder Aaron Hardie, Matt Short, and left-arm fast bowler Spencer Johnson earned their maiden call-up in the side and will be in line for an international debut during the three-match T20 series.
Marsh has been named as skipper for the South Africa series only, with Cricket Australia yet to decide on a full-time replacement for Finch, who played his final T20 International last October.
The 31-year-old has the experience of leading Perth Scorchers and Western Australia before the leadership role was given to Ashton Turner, who was backed in some corners as a possible candidate for the position.
"Mitch has long been a senior player within the white-ball structure, with this an opportunity for him to add to his leadership skills at the international level," said selection chair George Bailey. "We look forward to him taking that step in South Africa."
The T20I side consists of a new generation of stars with a preliminary squad for the ODI World Cup in India already been named.
Only five players including skipper Marsh, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, and Adam Zampa are included in the 14-men squad from the side that played in the team's most recent T20I game played in November last year.
Marsh after shining at the no.3 position has been given the crucial role as his performances on tours of the West Indies and Bangladesh kept him very high into consideration.
He retained the key role for the 2021 T20 World Cup and again delivered when it mattered, earning player-of-the-match honors in the final with a game.
