Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara has called for transparency regarding overlooked pacer Mohammed Shami's international future, urging the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors to have an open and honest discussion with the veteran speedster.
Shami, who had undergone ankle surgery following the 2023 World Cup, has not been included in India's plans since the Champions Trophy in March.
The pacer failed to find a place in the home Test series against West Indies and was also overlooked for the South Africa series, beginning at the Eden Gardens on Friday.
Shami has been working to regain his spot in the national team despite outstanding performances in domestic cricket, including 15 wickets in three Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal.
"I'm not the one to answer .. I mean, the selectors and the team management should have a very honest conversation with him. What's the plan going forward? Whether they want to pick him or they are looking at the young players," JioStar expert Pujara said during a Media Day when asked if it is the end of the road for Shami.
"And if he is being informed that they are not looking at him, then it is always Shami's personal call whether he wants to carry on playing first class cricket, whether he still wants to, whether he wants to retire from international cricket, I mean he is part of the IPL as well," the veteran batter said.
"Whether the team management and the selectors, whether they are looking at him or not, that is the communication which should be happening with Shami. He should have a clear road ahead. He should have that clarity of what the selectors and the team management are looking at and what is expected out of it," he added.
