Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has revealed his determination to recover from his ankle injury and make himself available for selection for the upcoming home Test series against England. The five-Test series is scheduled to commence in Hyderabad on January 25.
Shami, who last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, has been away from international cricket, causing him to miss the entire South African tour, including the two Test matches. There was multiple reports doing rounds which suggested that Shami might miss the initial two Tests against England.
Speaking after receiving the prestigious Arjuna Award, the 33-year-old expressed his commitment to rehabilitation and his desire to be part of the Test series against England. Shami's potential return would bolster India's pace bowling unit, providing a crucial boost in the home series.
"I am trying best to be available for the selection for England Test series but test match is longer format so you don't want to be in doubt," he said in an interaction with India Today.
"Whenever it comes to T20s , many times I don't understand whether I am in scene or not," he said. "But what I feel is that you have IPL before the T20 World Cup and that is the best opportunity to bring in momentum, and if management will ask me to play, I’ll be available."
India are set to play three T20Is against Afghanistan before the England Test series, with the first T20 scheduled for January 11. Shami's return would add experience to the team's bowling attack and contribute to India's efforts to secure success in the Test series against England.
