Former Chennai Super Kings(CSK) captain MS Dhoni is unlikely to play in the team’s final home league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 18 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Will MS Dhoni be seen in during CSK vs SRH clash?

Dhoni, who is now 44, has not travelled with the team to match venues this season and has mostly stayed back at the hotel, even during CSK’s home games. However, things are expected to be different for the clash against SRH, as Dhoni is likely to be present at the stadium.

Despite that, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter is unlikely to feature in the match, even as an Impact Player. IndianExpress reported that Dhoni picked up a fresh thumb injury during a training session before CSK’s trip to Lucknow. Although he had booked tickets to travel with the squad, he later decided to remain in Chennai.

A day before the game, Dhoni spent around 30 minutes batting in the nets and looked comfortable while playing some big shots. But after the session, he reportedly decided against playing as he is still not fully fit.

 

While there were strong chances of Dhoni appearing as an Impact Player, that now seems unlikely. Still, he is expected to attend the match and take part in the traditional lap of honour after CSK’s final home game of the league stage.

Why MS Dhoni not featuring in IPL 2026?

Dhoni has not played this season after being ruled out earlier because of a calf injury. Even during away matches, he preferred staying in Chennai instead of travelling with the team. After recovering, he was also hesitant to replace young wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma, whom the franchise sees as a long-term option.

Meanwhile, the injury to Jamie Overton created an opening in the playing XI, which many felt could have allowed Dhoni to return. But with this latest setback, CSK may instead look at South African all-rounder Dian Forrester, who recently joined the squad as Overton’s replacement and has already had an extended training session with the team.
