Can Nepal Qualify For The 2027 ODI World Cup?

Yes, Nepal can still qualify for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, but the team must progress through the qualification pathway. A place in the tournament is not guaranteed by finishing among the top four in League 2.

The World Cup will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia from October 2 to November 21, 2027. The 14-team tournament will have four places decided through the final qualification process. ICC’s qualification update.

Nepal’s qualification for the marquee depends on its position in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 standings.

Route 1: Finish In The Top Four

The top four teams in League 2 qualify directly for the 2027 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, the final stage before the World Cup.

However, reaching the Qualifier does not automatically secure a berth in the showpeice event. Nepal would still need to finish among the top four teams in that tournament to qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Route 2: Go Through The Qualifier Play-Off

If Nepal finishes outside the top four in League 2, its World Cup hopes will not end immediately.

The team would have to compete in the Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-Off, which features the bottom four teams from League 2 and the top four teams from the Challenge League.

The top four teams from the Play-Off advance to the final Cricket World Cup Qualifier. Nepal would then need to finish in the top four there to secure a place at the World Cup.

The ICC confirmed that the top four League 2 teams advance directly to the Qualifier, while the remaining four must take the Play-Off route.

Why The Oman Match Matters For Nepal

Every remaining match is important for Nepal as the League 2 competition approaches its conclusion. Winning matches will help the team collect points and improve its position, while a strong margin of victory can also help its net run rate if teams finish level on points.

Nepal will need consistent performances from its top order and middle order to remain in contention. Paudel’s half-century against Oman provided a useful contribution, but the team needs results as well as individual performances to keep its World Cup campaign on track.

The immediate task is to finish the innings strongly and compete for a win against Oman. Nepal’s final position in League 2 will determine whether it gets a direct route to the Qualifier or has to take the longer Play-Off path.
