Australia defeated New Zealand by six wickets in the first T20I at the Sky Stadium in Wellington to go 1-0 up in the three-match series.

They needed 16 runs in the last over and Tim David made no mistake in taking Australia home, smashing a boundary on the last ball when they needed four runs. He remained unbeaten on 31 off just 10 balls. The key player was the skipper Mitchell Marsh as he remained unbeaten on 72 off 44.

Marsh continues his consistency in the shortest format as he brings up yet another T20I half-century. This has come at a crucial juncture as his team needs him till the end in this massive run chase. On the other hand, that was a magnificent over from Sodhi as just four runs came off it.

Only one for Australia in the first two overs as New Zealand are off to a promising start with the ball. Brilliant over from Milne but he conceded a boundary on the last delivery. Nine came off that.,

New Zealand have posted a massive total of 215/3 in their 20 overs in the first T20I against Australia. 15 runs came off the last over bowled by Pat Cummins. Rachin Ravindra was the top run-getter for the Blackcaps as he scored 68 runs in just 35 balls with the help of two fours and six sixes. Mitchell Starc, Cummins, and skipper Mitchell Marsh picked up a wicket each for the Aussies.

Australia have done with the comeback after conceding quick runs in the first few overs. Mitchell Marsh has introduced the leg spin and Zampa came up with a six-run over to start.

Wicket! Starc gets the first breakthrough as he removes the dangerous batter Allen for 32. He looked for another big shot but was deceived by the pace and found the fielder inside the circle.

Allen has started to attack as he smashed Hazlewood for a four and a six in the second over. He smashed three sixes off Maxwell who ended up leaking 20 runs from his first over.

A disciplined first over from Mitchell Starc as he gave away just three runs in front of Finn Allen and Devon Conway. There was a run-out chance but the batter made it to the crease well in time.

New Zealand have won the toss and have opted to bat first in the first T20I against Australia.

New Zealand and Australia have faced off in a total of 16 T20I matches so far. Australia have the edge with 10 wins, while New Zealand have won six matches.

"You'll have to find out, we'll announce our team at the toss. There will be certain guys that probably bat in different positions than they have done in the past, but ultimately we're here to win the series. I've batted three for the last 18 months, so I'll be there to start with. And obviously Heady and Davey Warner have been amazing for us over the last period of time, so I daresay that will be the top three."
