Pakistan Cricketer Dies In Australia: Junaid Zafar Khan, a Pakistani-origin cricketer playing club-level turf cricket in Adelaide, tragically passed away on the field during a match over the weekend. The incident occurred amid extreme heat waves affecting South Australia.
According to reports, the match was being played between Old Concordians and Prince Alfred Old Collegians at Concordia College in Adelaide when Junaid, who had moved to Australia from Pakistan in 2013, collapsed while batting. The temperature at the time was reportedly around 41.7 degrees Celsius.
Despite immediate medical attention and efforts by paramedics to revive him, Junaid, who was in his 40s, could not be saved. His sudden passing has left the local cricket community in shock, highlighting the dangers of playing in extreme weather conditions.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of a valued member of the Old Concordians’ Cricket Club, who tragically suffered a medical episode while playing on the Concordia College oval today,” Old Collegians said in a statement.
“Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he sadly did not survive. Thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”
A report suggested that Junaid worked in the tech industry after moving from Pakistan to Adelaide. His close friend Hasan Anjum termed Junaid’s demise as a “big loss”.
“It’s a huge loss, he was destined for very big things in his life,” Anjum told the Advertiser.
The incident a debate in Australia as Adelaide Turf Cricket Association bylaws mandate that matches must be canceled if temperatures exceed 42°C during play. However, games can continue in conditions up to 40°C under special playing regulations.
