Dinesh Lad, Rohit Sharma's childhood coach, in a candid revelation, gave his assessment of Prithvi Shaw's career trajectory, pointing to the opener's own mistakes as the major reason behind his career downfall.
Shaw's turbulent phase shows no signs of taking a break, with recent setbacks including his omission from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad for the 2024-25 season and being unsold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction, following his release by Delhi Capitals (DC).
Lad recalled Shaw's meteoric rise as a young cricketing sensation, noting that the opener's decisions and actions took a toll on his performance.

“I have seen Prithvi since his childhood, from the time he was 10 years old. He was a highly talented player. But as I have said, everyone’s journey is individual, and I don’t know what exactly happened with him. Still, Prithvi Shaw was a very talented cricketer. Unfortunately, he went down the wrong path and ended up spoiling his cricket," Lad said on a podcast with Gaurav Mangalani.
Shaw's introduction to international cricket was nothing but an unbelievable spectacle of superb innings, with a debut century against the West Indies in a Test match in 2018, setting high expectations. But his career trajectory faltered, as he was excluded from the team in 2022 after a string of erratic performances.
Lad also drew comparisons between Shaw and Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, dubbing them the future of Indian cricket.
“Even now, I feel there should be a batter like him, the way he used to bat. Although right now we have some truly outstanding batters. For example, the way Vaibhav Suryavanshi is batting, and the way Ayush Mhatre is batting. These are future cricketers in the making. They are getting ready in line. Indian cricket is almost at the top,” he added.
Recently, Shaw was axed from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad in the middle of the 2024-25 season due to poor form and disciplinary concerns.
