Ranji Trophy 2024: India's star batter Shreyas Iyer smashed a brilliant double ton for Mumbai in the fourth round Ranji Trophy clash against Odisha in Mumbai. He played a brilliant knock of 233 runs off 228 balls, where he smashed 24 fours and nine sixes and also brought up his highest individual score in first-class cricket.

Iyer continued his overnight score of an unbeaten knock of 152 runs by already scoring his 15th first-class century on the first day. He continued his sublime form and scored his double ton off 201 balls and also went past his earlier highest individual score of 202 runs quickly.

He came into bat when Mumbai were reeling at 154/3 while batting first. Iyer along with Siddhesh Lad stitched a brilliant partnership of 354 runs for the fourth wicket and helped the team post a total of 500 runs. Lad also scored his ninth first-class century as the Mumbai batters showed their prowess against Odisha's clueless bowling lineup.

This was Iyer's second consecutive hundred in the ongoing domestic tournament, where he had already scored a brilliant knock of 142 runs in their last match against Maharashtra. This was also his first first-class hundred after three years as the last time he scored a century in this format was against was against New Zealand in Kanpur in 2021.

Iyer's tumultuous 2024

Post scoring his brilliant century against Maharashtra, Iyer gave the match against Tripura a miss to get the much-needed rest and then recorded his highest individual score in this format against Odisha. He was struggling with form initially in this domestic season, as he had scored just 154 runs in six innings in the Duleep Trophy, which includes two fifties and two ducks.

During the Irani Cup, while representing Mumbai, his performance was not up to the level, where he scored 57 and 8 runs in both innings. He was once again dismissed for a duck in the Ranji Trophy opener against Baroda. He didn't have a great year in 2024 as he was dropped from the Test team and was also stripped off his BCCI central contract list in January this year. And that's why these twin hundreds will boost his confidence as he is eyeing a return to the national side in the longest format.
