IND vs ENG: Ex-India head coach Ravi Shastri has reckoned that the team management should keep Shubman Gill as India's Test skipper, irrespective of the result of the Test series against England. Gill became India's new Test skipper after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format.

The youngster had become the fifth Indian skipper to have smashed a hundred in his captaincy debut. But his efforts went in vain as England defeated India by five wickets as they chased the mammoth target of 371 runs during the fourth innings.

Even though India had lost the match, Ravi Shastri showered huge praises on Shubman Gill for his maturity and requested the team management to stick with him as the Test skipper for the next three years.

“He’s matured a lot. The way he handles the media, the way he talks at press conferences, at tosses—he’s matured a lot. Let him be there for three years. Don’t chop and change irrespective of what happens in the series. Stick with him for three years, and I think he will deliver for you,” Shastri was quoted as saying to Wisden.

At the same time, he also revealed that Gill has all the qualities to become one of the best players in the sport and that he needs to adjust to the conditions quickly.

“I’ll be disappointed if Gill doesn’t go places. Languid, lazy elegance, and he’s got a regal element of being out there when he’s batting. If he can learn with exposure and adapt to conditions, I think that’s the one name I can see,” he concluded.

At the same time, after India lost the series opener, a lot of former cricketers slammed Gill for his captaincy in the game. That's why he will face a daunting task to gear up for the second Test match, which will begin on July 2 at Edgbaston.

The Men in Blue haven't won a Test match in Edgbaston as they had lost seven of eight matches. They would be racing well against history as they try to win the second Test match.
