Former India head coach has come up with his reaction on BCCI's decision to limit the family travel with the players on important tours. The decision came after India's heavy 1-3 defeat in Australia in the five-match Test series.

Shastri believes that when there are too many individuals around, players tend to get distracted, and it might be that current head coach Gautam Gambhir saw the situation getting out of hand. The back-to-back Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia cost India a place in the World Test Championship final. This prompted BCCI to introduce this new policy, aimed at ensuring cricketers maintain sharper focus and intensity.

Shastri, who himself coached the national team for a few years, shared his thoughts on the policy. Interestingly, during his tenure as India’s head coach, he never implemented such a rule, yet guided the side to some of its most memorable Test wins.

"When there are too many people around, you tend to get distracted. He (Gambhir) must have seen that it was getting out of hand. So he just put a limit on what can be done and what cannot be done," Shastri said while speaking on the Grade Cricketer podcast.

Shastri went on to mention that to create such an environment in the dressing room requires a specific kind of captaincy, a calm, composed captain who can think on their feet under pressure. Speaking about Shubman Gill, who debuted under his tenure, he lauded the youngster and backed him to achieve big as the Indian captain.

"The good thing for him is that he has got a captain now who is stable, composed and calm. Gill is the man for the next decade for India," Shastri said. The young batter Gill has already replaced Rohit Sharma as Test and ODI skipper. Gill's first assignment as the ODI skipper is the three-match series against Australia, beginning Sunday, October 19, in Perth.

Talking about Gill's Test captaincy, he helped India play out a famous 2-2 draw in the five-match away series against England before outclassing the West Indies with a 2-0 whitewash.
