India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma shared a glimpse of his training session with former assistant coach Abhishek Nayar at a Mumbai facility as debates around embracing a "youth-only" policy in ODIs have accelerated.
The 38-year-old batter was seen interacting with Nayar at a gym in Mumbai. Following a post Indian Premier League (IPL) break and his shocking retirement from Test cricket, Rohit resumed training, gearing up for his next challenge as the ODI skipper.
The ODI captain was enjoying his time off with family on holiday in England and came back last week.
Rohit posted an Instagram story from a gymnasium with his close friend Nayar, who also, at times, doubles up as his personal coach.
Nayar, who has also performed key roles in the performances of Dinesh Karthik, KL Rahul, Rinku Singh and young KKR batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi, was India's assistant coach till the Champions Trophy, following which he was sacked.
However, many players who have worked with Nayar have spoken about the differences the former assistant coach brought to their games, including KL Rahul, who worked with him before the start of the England Test series, in which he ended with 532 runs.
The photograph suggests Rohit is far from done, with the 2027 ODI World Cup still on his radar, still 26 months from now.
The current national selection committee would like to ensure that a stable core is created for the 50-over set-up and with players who are available for the next two years.
Many in the Indian team management reportedly believe it's time to bid farewell to Rohit, potentially against Australia, with Shubman Gill being announced as the new 50-over skipper.
With 32 ODI centuries to his name, Rohit has solidified his status as one of the ODI greats, third only to Virat Kohli (51) and Sachin Tendulkar (49).
Notably, earlier this year, he was adjudged 'Player of the Match' in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand.
