The ICC has sent Indian cricket fans into a frenzy with a new ordinary poster. In the poster, it was seen that India's white-ball series against England next year, which included England's skipper Harry Brook and India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma. The image had sent the fans into a frenzy- if Rohit would be playing throughout the next year, that means that he might lead the team from the front during the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rohit had announced his retirement from the shortest format after helping the team lift the 2024 T20 World Cup, and then also retired from the longest format before the series against England. Rohit has now become just a one-format player and will only be playing in the ODIs.
The ICC had removed the post from their official social media account and also didn't reveal the reason behind it.
India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has reckoned that planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup from now is too early.
“We still have a T20 World Cup before that, and that is again a huge tournament, which is going to happen in India in February-March. So, the entire focus at the moment—after England—will be on the T20 World Cup. And November-December 2027 is still two-and-a-half years away,” Gambhir told reporters during the pre-match press conference.
“If you keep performing, age is just a number,” he concluded.
At the same time, the captaincy in Indian cricket has evolved. In the longest format, Shubman Gill helped the side recently conclude the Test series against England at 2-2, and that too quite confidently. Suryakumar Yadav is India's T20I skipper and has replaced Rohit Sharma.
Whether Rohit Sharma will lead the team from the front during the 2027 ODI World Cup is quite uncertain, but the ICC's new poster and Gambhir's perspective have left the fans wondering.
