Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes the selectors should focus on what is best for the team rather than making decisions based on Rohit Sharma when planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup. He also said that Rohit would not be part of his squad for the tournament.
Rohit scored 143 runs in three ODIs against Afghanistan at an average of 47.67, including one half-century. Although the 2027 ODI World Cup is still more than a year away, discussions have already started over whether the veteran opener will be part of India's plans.
Speaking on Sony Sports, Manjrekar said the selectors should look at India's future instead of thinking about individual players.

“I mean, this will become controversial. But I think I shouldn’t care; I haven’t cared for all these years. We are in mid-2026, and that World Cup is in late 2027. I think India have options," Manjrekar said while speaking on Sony Sports.
“Virat Kohli, with his sheer fitness, is making a strong case. But what happens here is when we select, we are thinking of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. We should think about what is best for Indian cricket," Manjrekar added.
He also said India should give younger players more opportunities so they can serve the team for many years.
“Opening in 50 overs is fun. It is a rehabilitation programme. That, I think, you should give to a player who is in his prime and has another 5-10 years. If you are thinking only about Rohit Sharma, it’s not right," Manjrekar said.
“You have to think about Indian cricket, the future of Indian cricket. In that space, I don’t think Rohit Sharma would be my choice in the squad," Manjrekar added.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has been included in India's ODI squad for the England series. However, his availability will depend on his fitness after he missed the Afghanistan series because of a hamstring injury.
