IND vs ENG: Sai Sudharsan, who will be the latest entrant in India's Test team, has reckoned that he doesn't want to pick his batting position for the five-match Test series against England, which will be held next month and would adapt to any position that the coach would tell him to. Sudharsan, who is currently opening for Gujarat Titans during IPL 2025 and also bats at the same position for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, received his maiden Test call-up after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the longest format.
There are a lot of batting positions that need to be decided- as to who will open with Yashasvi Jaiswal and who would come into bat at the No.3 and No.4 positions.
“I have many likes. But I don’t think I am in a position to choose where I want to play. Wherever the coaches tell me to play, I think I will be mentally and skilfully, you know, try and be ready for the opportunity," Sudharsan told PTI.
According to some reports, new Test skipper Shubman Gill might come in to bat at No.4 position while KL Rahul would be opening with Yashasvi Jaiswal. And Sudharsan then might come into bat at the No.3 position, which was earlier occupied by Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara.
Sudharsan would be playing his debut Test series with his fellow Gujarat Titans opener and skipper Shubman Gill. They have been in sublime form and are considered as one of the best opening partnerships for the ongoing season.
“I have been a part of his growth (Gill’s) as well. I have seen him for the last four years. Such a talented batsman, such a skillful batsman, anybody can see. He will bring laurels and do great things for the country. I am very happy to play under him in my first Test series", he said.
There would be a gap of just a few days between the IPL 2025 summit clash and the India 'A' series against the English Lions, which Sudharsan would also be playing. Although, he does boast of experience of playing in County cricket under his kitty, his adapting to the conditions would be important.
“Transitioning from white ball to red ball takes a bit of time. But I focus a lot more on my basics. I focus a lot more on my patience even outside the field. The more patient you are, the more it reflects inside the field. So Test cricket is all about patience and longevity. So I feel the more I focus on that, the more I will be aware of it," he concluded.
