Shikhar Dhawan announces retirement: India's star batter Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket on Saturday, August 24.

Dhawan, who represented India in all three formats, posted a heart-warming video on his Instagram account to make a surprising announcement.

"As I close this chapter of my cricketing journey, I carry with me countless memories and gratitude. Thank you for your love and support! Jai Hind!" Dhawan wrote on Instagram.

Dhawan last played an international match for India in December 2022 during an ODI match against Bangladesh.

“Today when I look back, I only have good memories," Dhawan said in the emotional video.

“I only had one dream and that was to play for India and I even achieved that. I am thankful for so many people who contributed to my journey. First of all my family. My childhood coach Late Tarak Sinha, and Madan Sharma under whose guidance I learnt the basics of the game.

“I would also like to thank my team with whom I have played cricket for so long. I got another family, I got the name, fame and the love of all the fans.

“There is a saying you need to turn the page to read the full story. That’s what I am going to do. I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket.”

Having made his India debut in October 2010, the star batter went on to represent the Men in Blue in 167 ODIs, 68 T20Is and 34 Tests.

While recalling his monumental career, Dhawan went on to thank BCCI, DDCA and all the fans who kept supporting him even in his tough period.

“When I am calling time on my career, I am at peace because I have played so much for my country. I am thankful to BCCI and DDCA for giving me the opportunity. I am also thankful to the fans, who have given me so much love over the years.

“I am telling myself one thing don’t be sad that you will not be able to represent India again but he is happy that he has played for India for so long. For me, the biggest thing is that I played.”

He ended his career with 6793 ODI runs, 1759 T20I runs and 2315 Test runs under his belt.

Dhawan was part of the Indian team that lifted the ICC Champions Trophy title in 2013 under MS Dhoni's captaincy after defeating England in the final.

He ended the tournament as the top run-getter, having smashed 363 runs in five matches at an average of 90.75 on the back of one fifty and two hundred.
