Shreyas Iyer is likely to be rewarded for his recent impressive performances after being left out of India's Asia Cup 2025 squad. A nationwide debate erupted after Iyer was not included in the 15-member squad for the continental tournament, which is scheduled to be played in the UAE from September 9 to 28.
Shreyas is currently in Bengaluru, representing West Zone in the Duleep Trophy match against Central Zone. The star batter could get a prominent role with the India A team when the selectors meet to pick the squad that will take on the Australia A. The right-handed batter is expected to be in line for the captaincy role. The Aussies will be in India next week and are scheduled to play two four-day red ball games followed by three white ball matches.

In the ongoing Duleep Trophy, Shreyas had a disappointing outing in the first innings against Central Zone as he scored just 25 runs before getting dismissed by Khaleel Ahmed. But it is unlikely that this knock will have any impact on his selection, for the two red-ball games, if not for the three white-ball matches.

The red-ball fixtures between India A and Australia A are scheduled at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, while the one-dayers will be hosted at Kanpur's Green Park Stadium
Notably, Iyer had a memorable outing in the IPL 2025 both as a batter and as the skipper of the Punjab Kings. He was the sixth top run-getter with 604 runs to his name in 17 matches as the Punjab Kings finished as the runners-up.
Apart from Shreyas, the selectors are expected to reward the standout performers from the ongoing Duleep Trophy as well. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, along with experienced top-order batters Abhimanyu Easwaran and B Sai Sudharsan, are among the names in contention.
Easwaran, in particular, has prior experience captaining India A.
With the fact that Iyer is still in the reckoning for red-ball matches, he could be in consideration for future matches, be it for the home Test series against West Indies in October or subsequent away red-ball series in Australia.
