England vs India 5th Test: Shubman Gill has been in remarkable form with the bat ever since he became India's Test captain and has been breaking records during the ongoing England tour.

Gill has achieved another massive feat while batting in the ongoing fifth Test between India and England at the Oval as he entered his name in the history books by breaking the record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India as captain. He has gone past Sunil Gavaskar's tally to reach the huge feat.

The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab needed 11 runs in the fifth Test to break Sunil Gavaskar’s record, and he reached the 11-run mark by hitting Jamie Overton for a four on the last ball of the 21st over.

Gavaskar played six matches for India as captain in the home series against the West Indies team in 1978-79 and scored a total of 732 runs.

Most runs in Test series by Indian captains

Shubman Gill: 733 runs in 5 matches (vs England) in 2025

Sunil Gavaskar: 732 runs in 6 matches (vs West Indies) in 1978-79

Virat Kohli: 655 runs in 5 matches (vs England) in 2016

Virat Kohli: 610 runs in 3 matches (vs Sri Lanka) in 2017

Virat Kohli: 593 runs in 5 matches (vs England) in 2018

The overall record of scoring the most runs in a Test series as captain is in the name of former Australia great Don Bradman. During the 1936-37 Ashes series in Australia, Bradman played five matches and in nine innings scored a total of 810 runs. Gill needs to score at least 89 runs in the fifth Test to break that 88-year-old record.

Most runs in a Test series by captain

Don Bradman (AUS): 810 runs in 5 matches (vs ENG) in 1936-37

In the ongoing match, Gill will also look to break the record of scoring the most runs in a Test series played between India and England and also the record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India.
