IND vs ENG: India's star batter Virat Kohli used to bat at the No.4 position in the longest format ever Sachin Tendulkar announced his retirement way back in 2013. And after 11 years, now that Kohli too has announced his retirement from the Test cricket, a new batter will now take up this position. There were a lot of discussions as to who would bat at this position.
As per experts and former cricketers, batters like Karun Nair, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill might replace Kohli to be India's new No.4 Test batter but nothing has been made official yet.
It would be interesting to see which batter will bat at the No.4 position during the first Test match against England, which will be held at Headingley next week. But before the series opener in Leeds, Shubman Gill, who is India's new Test skipper was enquired as to where would he bat during an interaction on Sky Sports with Dinesh Karthik, but Gill, who played at the No.3 position during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, didn't reveal anything.
As per Gill, the Indian team is currently playing an intra-squad match and after that, the team management will be deciding their playing XI.
“Not really. I think we are playing a practice game, a warm-up game, so I’m going to maybe test the waters in that one and see which batting position suits for who," Gill was quoted as saying on Sky Sports.
Gill, who is in contention to become India's next No.4 batter in the longest format, has represented India at No.3 position during the 2023-25 WTC cycle and before that, he used to bat as an opener. But he hasn't batted at No.4 position across any format and the upcoming Test series against England could mark a new beginning in his career.
KL Rahul used to bat at the No.4 position in this format and in the 50-over format but he might play as an opener during the Test series against England. He solidified his position as an opener by smashing a hundred while playing for India A during the second unofficial Test match against England Lions last week.
