Australia's star batter Steve Smith has picked up an elbow injury ahead of their upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, starting from January 29.
Smith will be leading the Australian team in the two-match series. The Aussies will be heading into the series on the back of a recent remarkable win against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home.
Smith, who played a key hand in Australia's Test series win over India, sustained the elbow issue while throwing a ball in the field during a Big Bash League match on Friday.

"He is preparing to join the test squad in Dubai later this week following further specialist input. Further updates will be shared as they are known," said a Cricket Australia Press release.
The 35-year-old was spotted wearing an elbow brace on his right arm on Sunday, where he had been operated on in 2019.
Notably, the full-time skipper Pat Cummins will not be available for the Sri Lanka tour due to the birth of his second child and also an ankle injury.
"Pat Cummins is recovering from increased left ankle soreness which was aggravated by high workloads during the Test summer. He will seek specialist rehabilitation advice this week and is likely to require a period of physical preparation and recovery," the release quoted about Cummins.
On the other hand, the left-arm spinner Mathew Kunnemann who made an impressive debut in India in 2023 and was selected for the Sri Lankan tour too, has sustained a broken thumb while playing for Brisbane Heat in the ongoing BBL.
"He will remain in Australia while the surgical wound heals further. He is planning to resume bowling this week with a view to joining the squad in Sri Lanka if he continues to progress well," the release added.

Australia made it to the World Test Championship final with a 3-1 Test series defeat against India and will face South Africa in the summit clash.
