In a highly unusual turn of events during Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh clash, Angelo Mathews found himself declared "Timed Out," a scenario that happened first time in the history of sport. The incident unfolded as Mathews delayed taking the strike after having some issues with his helmet.
When Mathews did not reach the crease in time and called for a replacement, Shakib Al Hasan and the Bangladesh team appealed for a time-out, as per the rules. Despite Mathews' efforts to explain the situation to both the umpires and Shakib, the rules were followed, and Bangladesh decided not to withdraw their appeal.
The historic "Timed Out" decision added another layer of intensity to the rivalry between the two sides. Mathews had to depart the field without facing a delivery, leaving everyone astonished by this rare dismissal method.

"Timed out" is a rarely seen mode of dismissal in cricket. It takes place when a new batsman fails to step onto the field and be prepared to play within three minutes of the previous batsman's dismissal. This form of dismissal is extremely uncommon and has never been witnessed in any international cricket match.

40.1 Out Timed out Rule By Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC):
"After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out."
But as per the 'Playing conditions' rules for the Cricket World Cup 2023 - "Incoming batters are expected to be ready within 120 seconds (2 minutes). If they are late they will be out - Timed out."
This unusual incident occurred during the 25th over of the match, precisely when Angelo Mathews was due to take the strike following the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama. The Bangladesh skipper Shakib played a crucial role in this event, making the appeal. The umpires then inquired of Shakib whether he wished to maintain the appeal, and he affirmed his decision with a nod.
