WTC Championship Qualification Scenario: South Africa thrashed Sri Lanka by a huge margin of 233 runs, where fast bowler Marco Jansen took an 11-wicket haul in the series opener on Saturday. Sri Lanka was chasing a mammoth target of 516 runs and began the day reeling at 103/5.

They were skittled out for 282 runs, on the back of a late performance by Dinesh Chandimal, who helped the team bounce back by scoring a gritty knock of 83 runs.

By winning the series opener of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, South Africa is now lying at the second position of the WTC points table with 59.26 percent of points won. On the other hand, Sri Lanka has slipped to the fifth position with 50.00 percent of points won.

This means that now both India and Australia can't afford any more errors in the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series if they want to qualify for the 2025 WTC final, which will be held at Lord's in June next year.

The Jasprit Bumrah-led side might have won the series opener but they will have to win this series by a scoreline of 4-0 or 5-0 in order to qualify for the summit clash directly without depending on the results of other teams.

India is currently the table topper with 61.11 percent of points won whereas Australia has slipped to the third position with 57.69 percent of points won.

At the same time, the Pat Cummins-led side will aim to bounce back in the ongoing series against India and try to get favorable results in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka next year.

South Africa will also play a two-match Test series against Pakistan and if they do win their next three Test matches, then they would all but qualify for the summit clash.
