SA vs SL, 1st Test: South Africa is inching closer towards a huge win during the series opener against Sri Lanka in Durban. At stumps on the third day, the visitors need 413 runs to win the match with five wickets remaining during the second innings. While chasing a mammoth target of 516 runs, they were reeling at 103/5.
Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen took two wickets each whereas Gerald Coetzee dismissed Pathum Nissanka. Keshav Maharaj too made significant contributions by bowling four economical overs. Dinesh Chandimal remained unbeaten on 29 runs and batted along with captain Dhanjaya de Silva.
Nissanka and Angelo Matthews scored gritty knocks of 23 and 25 runs but were later dismissed. Their decision to dismiss Prabath Jayasuriya in the batting lineup didn't work in their favor as Rabada dismissed him.
Stubbs and Bavuma make Sri Lanka struggle
The hosts looked unstoppable, with a huge lead of 149 runs during their first innings. Batters like Toni de Zorzi and Wiaan Mulder failed to perform, but Tristan Stubbs and Temba Bavuma helped the team bounce back.
Stubbs scored 122 runs off 221 balls, smashing nine fours and two sixes. Bavuma scored 70 runs during the first innings and then 113 runs during the second innings. He and Stubbs stitched a partnership of 249 runs, which made Sri Lanka lose the plot.
David Bedingham had hit two fours and a six in his knock of 21 runs off 11 balls. Vishwa Fernando and Jayasuriya took two wickets apiece. Due to a brilliant batting performance, the hosts declared their innings at 366/5, and then the Protea bowlers rattled Sri Lanka's batting lineup.
