Ex-Australian skipper Steve Waugh has revealed that no one player in modern cricket and that no one should be allowed to dictate the game, while talking about BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar in a similar situation with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's future in the 50-over format. Both Rohit and Kohli are the two most popular cricketers, with huge fan followings.

Both are eyeing a spot in India's 2027 ODI World Cup team, but they will be inching close to 40 by then. Not many players can survive that long in this sport.

And if Agarkar drops them, then he will be under pressure, but if he does select them, then it will be like gambling with the team's plans of winning their first 50-over World Cup in 16 years.

“The players have to take some responsibility and realise that the game is bigger than the individual. You can’t put yourself above the game. You’ve got to realise that the game moves on and someone else will take your place. You’re not irreplaceable. So I think the players can’t dictate the game. At the end of the day, the chairman of selectors has got to make a call for the better," Waugh was quoted as saying on Vimal Kumar's YouTube channel.

Agarkar has indirectly said that both these star players and some BCCI officials have told some media organizations that they will pick a World Cup team on the basis of merit. Rohit was adjudged the Player of the series award against Australia, whereas Kohli was also at his best, and that has put Agarkar in a spot.

“You’ve got to be open and honest with the players as chairman of selectors. You need to have input. I don’t think you can afford to be too close to the players. You've got to have some distance because sometimes you have to make a tough call. Every chairman is different in the way they go about it. I hope Ajit Agarkar has a good relationship with the players, but he’s got to have some distance as well. Communication with experienced players is very important – Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma – what are you thinking? At the end of the day, the chairman of selectors has got to make a call," he said.
