India vs Australia, Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024: Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar was left fuming after not getting an invitation from Cricket Australia to hand over the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) to the Pat Cummins-led side after they completed a 3-1 series victory against India.

Notably, the Test series between India and Australia is named after Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border. The Australian team regained the Border-Gavaskar for the first time in 10 years. India had won their first Test series in Australia in 2018-19 and repeated the achievement in the 2020-21 tour as well.

In an interesting turn of events, Gavaskar was not invited to the podium for the trophy presentation by Cricket Australia (CA) which was done solely by Border. The former India batter was left upset by the decision and questioned the reason despite him being present at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

"I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all, it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India. I mean, I am here on the ground. To me, it should not matter that Australia won when it comes to the presentation. They played better cricket so they won. That’s fine. Just because I am an Indian (I did not present the trophy). I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border," Gavaskar was quoted saying by CODE Sports.

The former India captain spoke fondly about his friendship with Border and called it an honour to share the name of the trophy with him.

"I am very fond of AB (Border). The relationship really blossomed when both of us played for the Rest of the World team vs MCC during the MCC Bicentennial celebrations in 1987. We spent three weeks together, travelling together and playing a few matches against the county before the game against MCC. We really bonded and got to know each other, the culture, and the person. Bit like what IPL does these days, bringing people from different countries together. I feel honoured, privileged, and blessed that the series between India and Australia is named after us. Such an iconic series – it’s a blessing," Gavaskar added.

India lost the fifth and final Test match against Australia by 10 wickets in Sydney, winning the series in an emphatic fashion.
