U19 Women's World Cup Final
Riding on the back of Gongadi Trisha's all-round performance rampant India defended their U19 Women's World Cup crown after beating South Africa by 9-wicket in the summit clash at the Bayuemas Oval, Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
With this win, India won the ICC women's U-19 T20 World Cup for the second successive time.
The Indian bowlers, led by Gongadi Trisha (3/15), produced a clinical performance to bowl South Africa out for 82 in 20 overs. Trisha slammed crucial 44 runs in 32 balls.
Chasing an easy target of 83 runs, India got off to a flying start in their chase, making a blistering beginning to their innings. In the first two overs, they racked up an impressive 18 runs without losing a single wicket, setting a strong tone for the rest of their pursuit.
India's impressive start continued unabated, with their opening pair taking the team to 36 without loss after just four overs. However, South African captain Kayla Reynek finally made the breakthrough, dismissing Kamalini G to leave India at 44-1 at the end of the powerplay.
Undeterred, India maintained their momentum, with Trisha Gongadi leading the charge. By the end of the ninth over, India had reached 65-1, with Gongadi batting confidently on 38*.
India completed the job with 52 balls to spare as they reached 84 for one in 11.2 overs.
Gongadi Trisha top-scored for India with an unbeaten 44 off 33 balls while Sanika Chalke remained not out on 26 off 22 balls.
Earlier, after winning the toss, South Africa chose to bat first, but their innings got off to a shaky start. India struck early, with Parunika Sisodia dismissing opener Simone Lourens for a duck, dealing a significant blow to the South African team.
The Indian side continued to build momentum, with Shabnam claiming the crucial wicket of Jemma Botha, a key player for South Africa, to leave them reeling at 20-2 by the end of the fourth over.
India's dominance continued as Aayushi Sharma struck, dismissing Diara Ramlakan to claim the third South African wicket. This further dented the South African innings, leaving them in a precarious position at 29-3 by the end of the powerplay. As the match reached its halfway point, South Africa's struggles persisted, with the team limping along at 33-3, facing a significant challenge to revive their innings.
As the match entered its final stages, South Africa found themselves in a difficult position, struggling at 58-5 with just four overs remaining.
However, Fay Cowling and Mieke van Voorst showed some resilience, forging a small but crucial partnership that offered a glimmer of hope for their team. Unfortunately, their efforts were short-lived, as Trisha Gongadi struck to break the partnership, and South Africa's innings subsequently unravelled, ultimately culminating in a disappointing total of 82 all out.
