Paralympian Navdeep Singh made the entire country proud after he claimed a gold medal in the F41 classification of javelin throw at the Paris Paralympic Games and this feat made him the sporting sensation in India.
In a surprising turn of events, Iranian athlete Sadegh Beit Sayah was disqualified from the men's javelin throw F41 final at the Paris Paralympics despite throwing a record-breaking 47.64 meters. His remarkable performance was cut short when he was disqualified for a rule infringement, allowing India's Navdeep Singh, who had originally won silver, to win the gold.
"Dhoni waale fan ho ya Virat waale fan ho (Are you a Dhoni fan or Virat fan?)," Shubhankar Mishra asked on his YouTube Channel. However, Nadeep wasted no time and instantly picked Rohit Sharma as his favourite cricketer.
"People show themselves nice in front of the camera, but he [Rohit] is all-natural," Navdeep Singh said.
When questioned further about why, the Paralympian said he enjoyed the way Rohit batted when he slammed a double ton.
Navdeep's international career took off with a bang at the Asian Youth Para Games, where he won his first gold medal. He then dedicated himself to rigorous training at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) facilities in Gandhinagar and Bangalore, continually improving his abilities and perfecting his craft. Then in Dubai in 2021 at the Fazza International Championship, he secured another gold medal.
Despite his stellar start, Navdeep face a setback, missing medals with a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Paralympics and Asian Para Games. Later he claimed a bronze at the 2024 World Para Athletics Championship, but despite a podium finish, he faced criticism.
“I suffered a lot, so I wanted to achieve something for my country. My event was on the last day, but I came on the August 31, so I kept preserving myself. I heard things like, ‘He can’t do this, he only performs well in India, but fails in competition’. I heard these from several quarters, but I just had to ignore all this. I just needed guidance and the right path," he added.
“I carried all my past baggage, the training, the hard work, the criticisms. I knew I had to unleash all of this on the September 7, and I did that and won," Navdeep said.
