Ex-India cricketer Virender Sehwag opened up on how MS Dhoni's decision to snub him in the 2008 tri-series in Australia had almost led him to think about retirement. Sehwag is one of the country's best ODI batters as he has scored 8273 runs at a staggering average of 35.05 and a strike rate of 104.33.

But way back in the 2007-08 series, he had a forgetful outing with the bat. He could score just 81 runs after playing in five matches at a poor average of 16.20, and that made Dhoni drop from the playing XI. During an interaction with Padamjeet Sehrawat, Sehwag revealed that if he isn't selected in the playing XI, then he should retire from the 50-over format.

"In the 2007-08 series against Australia, I played the first three matches and then MS Dhoni dropped me from the side. I wasn't picked for a while after that. Then I felt that if I can't be a part of the playing XI, then there was no point in my playing ODI cricket," Sehwag was quoted as saying to Padamjeet Sehrawat.

How Sachin Tendulkar made Sehwag reverse his call

Sehwag further revealed that he talked to Sachin Tendulkar, who then immediately stopped him from retiring. Tenfdulkar informed him that he too went through a rough patch way back in 1999-2000 and assured Sehwag that the bad phase would eventually pass.

He tried to convince Sehwag not to make such an emotional decision and that he should be participating in a few more series and then decide.

"Then I went to Tendulkar and said, 'I am thinking of retiring from ODIs'. He said, 'No, I went through a similar phase in 1999-2000, where I felt I should leave cricket. But that phase came and went. So, you are going through a trough, but it will pass. Don't make any decision when you are emotional. Give yourself some time and 1-2 series, and then take a call.' When that series ended, I played in the next series and made a lot of runs. I played the 2011 World Cup and we won the World Cup as well," he concluded.

Sehwag did play a huge role in helping India lift the 2011 ODI World Cup title. He had announced his retirement from all kinds of cricket way back in October 2015.
