Jay Shah becomes new ICC chairman: Jay Shah scripted history on Tuesday, August 27, when he was announced as the youngest-ever ICC chairman. He took over the role from Greg Barclay.
Shah will commence his tenure as the fifth ICC chairman from India, in December and will leave his current position as BCCI secretary, which he has held since 2019.
Shah was the sole nominee for the chairmanship after current Chair Greg Barclay decided not to seek a third term.
The 35-year-old has become one of the most influential figures in the world of cricket with his unprecedented steps and commendable work as BCCI's secretary.
He played a key role in solidifying India's position as the most powerful cricket board globally in recent years.
As Shah’s election as the new ICC chairman marks a new chapter for the global body, here’s a comprehensive look at his career and personal life.
Who is Jay Shah?
Jay Amitbhai Shah is the son of India's current Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Jay married Rishita Patel in February 2015.
Shah's formal presence in cricket administration began with the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA). He served as an executive board member of the Central Board of Cricket, Ahmedabad, starting in 2009.
Having tried his hands at working at the district level, Shah took up the responsibility at the state level as an executive with GCA.
By September 2013, he became the joint secretary of the GCA, working closely with his father, Amit Shah, who was the GCA president back then.
He played a key role in overseeing the construction work of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, now the world's largest cricket stadium.
Working with the BCCI
Shah's impressive work at the GCA helped him make his way to BCCI where he joined the finance and marketing committees in 2015.
His significant contributions led to his election as the youngest BCCI secretary in October 2019 during Sourav Ganguly's tenure as board president.
Shah's time as BCCI secretary witnessed notable achievements, including the historic Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights deal in 2022, where the league's five-year rights were sold for a staggering Rs 48,390 crore.
The unprecedented feat made IPL the second most valued sporting league globally in terms of per-match value, trailing only the National Football League (NFL).
Hosting IPL during the COVID-19 pandemic and kicking off a remarkable Women's Premier League tournament were some other commendable achievements by the BCCI during his tenure as the board secretary.
Major roles in ACC and ICC
Jay Shah had his responsibilities extended when he was appointed President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in January 2021.
His influence extended to the global stage when the BCCI selected him as a representative for future Chief Executive Committee (CEC) meetings of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2019.
He then went on to become the ICC's Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) committee. in November 2022.
