Women's World Cup: Deepti Sharma was the star of the show as India began their ICC Women's World Cup campaign with a commanding 59-run victory over Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, contributing a crucial 53 with the bat and claiming 3/54 with the ball.

The real heroes behind India's success were Deepti Sharma, Amanjot Kaur, and Sneh Rana, whose all-round performances salvaged the team from early top-order struggles and paved the way for victory.

Sneh Rana returned figures of 2/32, while rookie left-arm spinner Shree Charani impressed with 2/37 from her eight overs.

Chasing a fighting target, Chamari Athapaththu's aggressive 43 off 47 balls gave Sri Lanka a strong start, but her dismissal proved pivotal, and the team lost momentum, eventually being bowled out for 211 in 45.4 overs.

By the time Deepti packed up her spell, conceding little and damaging Sri Lanka's backbone, India's bowlers had felt urgency, kept the compression on, and ensured the contest swung firmly in their favour.

Earlier, Amanjot exhibited character and determination under pressure in her maiden Women's World Cup match and she partnered with veteran Deepti to lift India from a precarious position and post a challenging 269 for eight.

Put into bat, India were in deep crisis at 124/6 when the 24-year-old from Mohali, Amanjot, walked into the middle. Alongside veteran partner Deepti (53 off 53), Amanjot (57 off 56) rebuilt the innings with a 103-run partnership off 99 balls.

Sneh Rana also put on a good cameo of 28 not out from 15 balls with two fours and two sixes to prop up the total.
