Experienced all-rounder Angelo Mathews has been called in to replace the injured pacer Matheesha Pathirana in Sri Lanka's World Cup squad ahead of their upcoming match against England. Pathirana sustained a shoulder injury during Sri Lanka's match against Pakistan and subsequently missed the matches against Australia and the Netherlands.

This marks Mathews' fourth World Cup appearance since the 2011 edition. The 36-year-old veteran has represented Sri Lanka in 221 ODIs, amassing 5865 runs with three centuries and 40 half-centuries, and also claiming 120 wickets in the format.

Last week, Sri Lanka had brought Mathews and pacer Dushmantha Chameera back into the squad as traveling reserves after they were initially omitted from the World Cup squad.

Pathirana becomes the second Sri Lankan player to be ruled out of the World Cup due to injury, following captain Dasun Shanaka, who returned home with a quadriceps tear that necessitated at least three weeks of recovery time. Chamika Karunaratne was named as Shanaka's replacement, while Kusal Mendis has taken over the captaincy in Shanaka's absence.

The addition of Angelo Mathews brings both experience and versatility to the Sri Lankan squad as they aim to regroup and perform well in the remaining matches of the World Cup.
