WPL 2026: Franchise co-owner Parth Jindal has emphasised that Delhi Capitals (DC) will be led by an Indian captain in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), despite acquiring South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt in the auction.
Meg Lanning led Delhi to three consecutive finals, but the title remained out of reach.
Ahead of the WPL 2026 mega auction, Delhi surprised many by releasing Meg Lanning. She was eventually picked by UP Warriorz for a staggering Rs 1.7 crore, after a ferocious bidding war with her former team.
“We are very clear we want an Indian as captain. We have our minds made up," speaking at the mid-auction press conference, Jindal said.
Wolvaardt joined Capitals for Rs 1.1 crore, after a brief bidding duel with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
With Wolvaardt's possibility of taking the captaincy role ruled out, Jemimah Rodrigues emerges as a top contender for the Delhi Capitals' reign.
“We think Laura can fill Lanning’s boots. Our spin attack is even better than last time. Looks like a very balanced team. We missed some explosiveness last year, which we have in Chinelle Henry now," Jindal said.
Jindal hinted at WPL development, stating that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to add at least one more franchise to the tournament.

"We would love to see the WPL home and away as well. This caravan format is okay, but it's not ideal. I'm sure that the BCCI is working on it. The amount of time that they get is very short and that's why in order to fit the WPL within this window, but I hope we get a bigger, longer window for the WPL going forward," said Jindal.
