The Delhi government has decided to strengthen its vigilance machinery by appointing retired officials with experience in vigilance-related work. Acting on government directions, the Directorate of Vigilance has issued an order to induct former central, Delhi government, and public sector officials who have previously handled vigilance matters.
The Directorate of Vigilance probes various cases involving government departments and submits its reports, based on which investigations are handed over to the CBI, ACB, or other agencies. However, the department has been relatively inactive over the past year, reportedly due to a shortage of expert personnel.
Former officials say the directorate has long faced a lack of trained experts, forcing staff to work late into the night to complete investigation reports on time. During major cases, including the excise scam, vigilance officers often stayed in the office overnight to meet deadlines.
A few months ago, the government expressed dissatisfaction over delays in receiving vigilance reports. Officials from the directorate then raised concerns about the severe manpower shortage. Following this, the government directed the strengthening of the vigilance setup, orders that are now being implemented.

Under this initiative, the directorate will induct retired officials with prior vigilance experience from various government departments and PSUs. Applications for these posts have now been invited.
