The Delhi High Court has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to take immediate steps to resolve traffic congestion allegedly caused by the weekly market in Shalimar Bagh.

A bench comprising Justices Pratibha M. Singh and Madhu Jain instructed the Station House Officer (SHO) of Shalimar Bagh police station to ensure that the weekly market operates strictly in accordance with the rules framed by the MCD. The court further directed that any vendor found violating the prescribed norms must be removed by the SHO.

The court also asked both the MCD and the Delhi Police to submit status reports on compliance. The matter is scheduled for the next hearing on April 6.

The directions came while hearing a petition filed by local residents, who alleged that unauthorised vendors were setting up stalls without permission, leading to severe traffic jams and inconvenience to commuters and residents.

The bench noted that in August 2025, it had passed an order directing the MCD to reconsider the terms and conditions applicable to vendors operating in the weekly market.

During the proceedings, photographs were presented before the court showing overcrowding in the area during market days. The bench was informed about an existing policy governing weekly markets, which mandates that such markets be held only once a week and on days when other markets in the vicinity remain closed.

Subsequently, the court directed the MCD Assistant Commissioner to file a report following an inspection of the weekly market. The SHO was also instructed to submit a status report after inspecting the market on two consecutive Mondays.

The court emphasised the need for strict enforcement of regulations to ensure smooth traffic movement and public convenience in the area.
