Despite being inaugurated on September 27 by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the newly built seven-storey automated car park in Greater Kailash-1’s M Block Market remains non-operational even after 52 days.

The Rs 63.74-crore facility, designed to accommodate 399 vehicles, was expected to ease the area’s parking woes, but delays in obtaining permission for tree felling at the entry-exit points and for constructing the ground-floor ramp have stalled its opening.

Approved by the Standing Committee of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, the car park has been built on shuttle-based robotic parking technology, which can retrieve vehicles in just 2.5 minutes, significantly faster than the 15 minutes typically required in a traditional multi-level parking system. Officials say this will help reduce fuel consumption, save time, and curb pollution.

The construction company will operate and maintain the facility for 10 years. Once permissions are granted and technical issues are resolved, the car park is expected to become operational in December.

Under this fully automated system, vehicles are parked on a panel, after which a robotic lift transports them to an available slot. Widely used abroad, the technology ensures swift retrieval, with the system delivering the vehicle in under 2.5 minutes.

A proposal for an automated car park in M Block was initially presented in 2019 but was not approved. Following expert consultation and a fresh survey, the design was revised to expand capacity from 200 to 399 vehicles. The nine-storey structure, including the basement and ground floor, can accommodate 57 cars on each floor. It also includes EV charging points on the ground floor and lift access for basement users.
