Delhi’s long-silent Rajghat Thermal Power Plant is set for a dramatic transformation, with the Delhi government planning to convert the defunct facility into a vibrant cultural and entertainment hub featuring live concerts, cafes and riverfront leisure spaces. Spread across 28 acres of prime land in the heart of the city, the former power station is envisioned as a new nightlife and tourism destination that blends heritage with modern urban experiences, officials said on Tuesday.
The redevelopment proposal is currently at the planning stage. Once the blueprint is finalised, it will be placed before the Cabinet for approval and funding. This will be followed by the preparation of a detailed project report, after which on-ground work on the ambitious makeover will begin.

Officials said the concept draws inspiration from several globally recognised projects where unused industrial sites were successfully converted into cultural hotspots, including New York’s High Line, London’s Battersea Power Station, Germany’s Zollverein complex and Toronto’s Distillery District in Canada.
Key Features Of Rajghat Redevelopment
1. Eco-Friendly Yamuna Promenade
LED-lit walkways, solar-powered pedal boats, and seating benches will create a scenic riverfront. A 24x7 youth learning and recreation hub is planned within the nightlife zone.
2. Food Street Celebrating Old Delhi
Around 500 meters near the promenade will host street food stalls and food trucks, giving local chefs from Old Delhi a platform at subsidized rates.
3. VR Heritage Museum
A late-night virtual reality museum will showcase Delhi’s rich history and heritage in an immersive format.
4. Entertainment and Gaming Spaces
Indoor gaming zones and immersive entertainment areas will provide fun for visitors beyond traditional nightlife options.
5. Rooftop Café with River Views
A scenic rooftop café will offer visitors panoramic views of the Yamuna, adding a premium leisure experience.
6. Youth Hub Inspired by Nalanda Campus
Eco-friendly space with library, e-library, high-speed internet, basketball court, cafeteria, and open-air reading areas blending education with recreation.
Rajghat Power Plant Shut In 20215
The Rajghat power plant, which was shut down in 2015 due to environmental concerns, sits on a 45-acre plot owned by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). The Delhi government now plans to transform this site into a vibrant and appealing nightscape, creating a new cultural and recreational landmark for the city.
