With winter temperatures dropping, electricity consumption in the capital has begun to rise sharply. This November, Delhi recorded a peak power demand of 4,486 MW on November 28, the highest ever for the month. In comparison, the peak demand in November last year stood at 4,259 MW.

Officials expect the load to rise further through December and January, with peak demand projected to touch 6,000 MW, surpassing last winter’s record of 5,655 MW.

According to discoms, Delhi’s electricity demand has already crossed 4,200 MW in the first three days of December, something that has never happened in early December in previous years. Both BSES and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited have assured that the city will not face power shortages. They say adequate supply has been secured through long-term power purchase agreements, and upgrades to the power network are underway.
