Amidst ongoing confusion within the Hindu community over whether Diwali should be celebrated on October 20 or 21, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Delhi Vyapar Mahasangh have announced that the festival will be observed on October 20.

In a statement, VHP state secretary Surendra Gupta explained that this year the Kartik Amavasya tithi will last for two days, beginning at 3:44 pm on October 20 (Monday) and ending at 5:54 pm on October 21 (Tuesday).

According to Gupta, astrologers and religious scholars have agreed that the Lakshmi-Ganesha puja should be performed on the day when the Pradosh and Nishitha periods (midnight) coincide with the Amavasya tithi, which falls on the night of October 20.

The VHP has also issued a letter urging all religious, social, and business organisations to conduct Diwali celebrations and perform puja in their respective areas on Monday night. Shops and offices, it added, may perform their puja rituals on October 21 morning or afternoon.
