The Sports Ministry has decided to dismantle Delhi’s iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JLN Stadium), just 15 years after it was renovated for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The venue, which served as the main arena for the Games, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics events, will make way for a new, modern Sports City project.
Why Government Has Decided To Dismantle The JLN Stadium
According to reports, the government plans to completely rebuild the 102-acre complex as part of an ambitious Sports City initiative. The proposed facility will include multi-sport venues catering to both training and competition, along with infrastructure for athletes, media, and public engagement. The project is still in its early planning stages, with models from Qatar and Australia being studied for design and legacy management.
A PTI report revealed that all offices currently operating from the JLN Stadium, including the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), will be relocated.
“The thinking is to create a campus that supports high-performance sport, mass participation, and media, all in one place,” the Sports Ministry said, as quoted by NDTV.
A similar concept is already being developed in Ahmedabad, where the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave is under construction around the Narendra Modi Stadium, a central venue for India’s 2030 Commonwealth Games and 2036 Olympics bids.
About The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium
Operated by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) under the Sports Ministry, the JLN Stadium has a seating capacity of nearly 60,000. Since the 2010 Commonwealth Games, it has hosted major events such as Indian Super League (ISL) matches for Delhi Dynamos and Punjab FC, and was a key venue during the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Originally built for the 1982 Asian Games, the stadium has also hosted the World Para Athletics Games (2025) and continues to serve as a venue for large-scale music concerts and cultural events.

Once dismantled, the redevelopment aims to transform the historic complex into a world-class, multi-disciplinary sports hub that aligns with India’s long-term vision for global sporting excellence.
