The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has taken a significant step towards creating an accessible and safe environment for people with disabilities. The council has approved a project to make 7 of its major buildings completely disability-friendly.
New Delhi Municipal Council Vice-Chairperson Kuljeet Chahal stated that the scheme, prepared at a total cost of Rs 1.86 crore, aims to provide easy and safe movement for people with disabilities and senior citizens in public buildings.
Chahal stated that the tender process for the project has been initiated. The selected contractor will be given 4 months to complete the work.
The 7 buildings to be adapted for people with disabilities under the project include Charak Palika Hospital, Talkatora Stadium, Aashirwad Old Age Home, Palika Bhawan, Akbar Bhawan, Chanakya Bhawan, and the Yashwant Place Residential-cum-Office Complex. Officials say that in the next phase, the council will equip more buildings with this facility.
The NDMC Vice-Chairperson stated that under the project, Braille signage will be installed for toilets, stairs, and wheelchair routes. Along with 27 wheelchairs and 27 evacuation chairs will be provided, which will be used to safely move patients up and down stairs during emergencies, especially in incidents like a fire.
To make the toilets disability-friendly, grab bars, anti-slip covers, and sensor-based urinals will be installed. Additionally, adhesive tactile tiles and weather-resistant tactile pavers will be laid in the buildings for guidance, so that visually impaired people can receive safe and clear directional instructions.
