A major security lapse, in which an i20 car remained parked for hours in the Red Fort's parking area without a security check before an explosion occurred opposite the fort, has compelled civic agencies to reconsider security arrangements. This will include incorporating provisions for meticulous vehicle inspections and maintaining their details in the parking contract allocation process.
Immediate Measures And Future Tender Changes
1. Immediate Checks Implemented: Following the explosion, a system for checking vehicles before entry has been made mandatory at parking sites in Old Delhi.
- At the Parade Ground multi-storey car park, vehicle boots and engines are being inspected with metal detectors.
- Authorities are also recording vehicle registration numbers and drivers' mobile phone numbers in a register.
2. MCD to Update Tender Conditions: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is preparing to add new security provisions to its parking tenders.
- According to Pramod Gupta, Chairman of the MCD's Remunerative Project Cell, a committee meeting is being called for November 17.
- A proposal will be introduced to add provisions for vehicle inspections and the installation of security equipment at the entrance gates to the tender conditions.
- The MCD has 417 parking sites in Delhi.
3. NDMC to Mandate Inspections and Training: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is also tightening its security protocols.
- NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Chahal stated that while the NDMC is currently managing the sites itself, staff have been instructed to inspect every vehicle and remain vigilant.
- The NDMC is set to hand over the operation and maintenance of more than 125 surface and underground car parks to private agencies through a new tender process.
- The tender conditions will include provisions for vehicle inspections, staff training, and the installation of cameras in the underground car parks.
- The NDMC has more than 150 parking sites.
Police To Verify 400,000 Employees In Chandni Chowk
Following the Red Fort explosion, the Delhi Police has decided to conduct verification of more than 400,000 employees in Chandni Chowk.
- North Delhi's Deputy Commissioner of Police, Raja Banthia, held a meeting with Mukesh Sachdeva, President of the Delhi Hindustani Mercantile Association (DHMA), and General Secretary Shri Bhagwan Bansal.
- It was decided that the employees of over 200,000 shops will be verified.
- Additionally, CCTV cameras will be installed in remaining locations.
- Shri Bhagwan Bansal stated that the employee verification drive will launch next week, with cooperation from all market associations.
Business Hit in Chandni Chowk Amid Wedding Season
The explosion has cast a dark shadow over the area, and people are avoiding it during the peak wedding season.
Home Deliveries: Households with upcoming weddings are concerned about their garments. Traders are now home-delivering items like lehengas, saris, and suits that were meant to be collected later.
Road Closures: The closure of Subhash Marg for the investigation is also causing difficulties. The road has been closed since the explosion and may be reopened on Friday, but it could take days for the situation to return to normal.
