To promote the adoption of solar energy in the villages of Delhi, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) has launched the 'Solar Sakhi' campaign. The initiative was inaugurated in Pooth Khurd village in North-West Delhi.
The campaign aims to empower women by making them leaders in the clean energy transition while raising awareness about the central government's ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’ (Free Electricity Scheme).
The campaign has commenced with 100 trained women, known as 'Solar Sakhis'. These women will visit more than 75 villages within TPDDDL's distribution area to educate residents, particularly women, about the benefits of rooftop solar panels.
Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, residents who install a rooftop solar system of up to three kilowatts are eligible for a subsidy of Rs 78,000 from the central government and an additional Rs 30,000 from the Delhi government.
Speaking at the launch event, Delhi's Power Secretary, Neeraj Semwal, said, "Initiatives like Solar Sakhi promote both renewable energy and women's empowerment."
