All about Milkman Of India: In India, milk is an integral part of daily life, not just a drink. Over the decades, India has grown, and now it leads the world in milk production and its supply. Diligent farmers collaborating with regional dairy cooperatives and innovative thinkers have revolutionised the dairy industry. However, the story of India’s milk journey is more than just production. It's about uplifting farmers, villages and helping smallholders, particularly women who are crucial for keeping dairy alive.
When it comes to transforming India’s milk sector, one brand rises above the rest - Amul Milk. But do you know who founded Amul, whose bold vision lifted several farmers and made India self-reliant in milk production? Thanks to smart strategies and strong grassroots organising, he laid the groundwork for a trusted label known nationwide for fresh, reliable dairy goods.
Let’s know about the milkman of India, who he was and how he led the revolution of milk production in India;
Who Transformed India’s Milk Industry?
India's milk industry faced challenges back in the 1940s to '50s. Farmers were getting very low prices because middlemen held all the power in the market. Small dairies used to barely survive due to tight margins. And then in the late 1940s, a new approach led by Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel and Dr Verghese Kurien, an Indian dairy engineer and social entrepreneur, changed the scenario.
In January 1970, they led the white revolution, also known as Operation Flood. Farmers started selling their milk straight to local cooperatives, so they earned what was fair. That system gave village people more control while keeping the milk reliable.

The Vision Behind Amul
The organisation was founded in 1946 by Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel, who chaired it until his retirement in the 1970s. Dr Verghese Kurien had a basic yet strong vision. So, he set up a group managed and controlled directly by the farmers. Due to this system, those who produced the milk got most of the earnings. It prioritised high standards and openness while supporting those who farm. Additionally, the group introduced an updated method for handling milk, refrigerated storage units and smart selling methods, which helped India produce enough milk independently.
