Group of Cats:  Cats are small domesticated carnivorous mammals, which are also known as house cats or domestic cats. They are one of the most loved human companions. Also known for their independent, solitary hunter sort of behaviour, and most importantly, cats show affection on their own terms, unlike dogs. These solitary hunters may also be seen in groups. Have you ever wondered what a group of cats is called? A group of cats is mostly called a 'clowder.' Do you know what is the meaning of clowder?

The term 'clowder’ for a group of cats is widely accepted and has an interesting significance behind it in the English language, which dates back to the 1700s. People believe that the word is derived from ‘clutter,’ which means to huddle together or cluster of things. That aptly describes how cats mostly stay close to each other.

Not just clowder, a group of cats is also signified with 'glaring,' 'clutter,' 'cluster,' 'kindle,' and even 'nuisance.' Now, the term glaring is usually used when cats stare staring each other, and the term is often only used for stray cats. 'Clutter’ and 'cluster’ have the same meanings as clowder. While 'Kindle' is a collective noun for baby cats, that is, kittens, it signifies their cuddly behaviour.

Additionally, the term 'colony' is used for feral (stray) cats, which tend to cooperate with each other for survival. These colonies have no hierarchical structure, unlike a pack of dogs, which also highlights the uniqueness of cats’ social behaviour.
