Kedarnath Temple is one of the oldest and most sacred temples in India. The holy shrine is dedicated to lord Shiva. Each year, numerous devotees dream of visiting the magnificent temple. However, the long trek to the Shri Kedarnath Jyotirlinga Temple is not easy. It comes along with high altitude location, unpredictable weather conditions and physical demands of the journey; all these reasons make the Kedarnath temple more auspicious. One of Hinduism's most sacred shrines to Lord Shiva is located between the breathtaking Himalayan ranges in the state of Uttarakhand, India.

The history of this ancient temple is a perfect mix of mythology, faith and legends of history, which makes it difficult to find the apt date of construction and the builder, which all becomes a part of academic debate.

Who Built Shri Kedarnath Jyotirlinga Temple?

The Kedarnath Temple is believed to have been built by the Pandava brothers after the Kurukshetra war. The Pandava brothers were the heroes of the Hindu Mahabharata epic. In search of Lord Shiva's forgiveness for their sins, the Pandavas are said to have built the temple where Shiva, in the form of a bull, had disappeared and left his hump. However, the fact has no archaeological confirmation or historical data that backs the Pandavas as the historical architects of the Kedarnath temple. Therefore, this belief system is backed by religious scripture and oral tradition.

When Was Shri Kedarnath Jyotirlinga Temple Built?

Documentation of the Archaeological Survey of India and history shows that the current Kedarnath temple was built or rebuilt largely in the 8th century CE by the Hindu philosopher-sage Adi Shankaracharya. Adi Shankaracharya is famously known for reviving many of the Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. He might have rebuilt the Kedarnath Temple next to the site of an earlier structure constructed by the Pandavas, according to BehindEveryTemple.org.

These are not just two mythological tales associated with the formation of the holy temple Kedarnath; some sources also suggest that King Bhoj of Malwa or even a later ruler renovated this structure in the 11th century.

The serene temple of Lord Shiva, Kedarnath, is constructed in fine stone architecture to stay as it is, even in the rough Himalayan climate. This architectural marvel and a holy shrine also symbolises layers of history, from mythical origins to the Pandavas to structural construction or rebuilding under Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Therefore, many people credit the first founding to the Pandavas. Most historians consider Adi Shankaracharya's 8th-century construction to be the beginning of the sacred Kedarnath temple.
