National Handloom Day 2025:  Every year, August 7 is marked as National Handloom Day, celebrating the rich legacy of India’s handloom sector. This date commemorates the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, which emphasised economic independence through indigenous products. As India celebrates the 11th National Handloom Day in 2025, the focus remains on empowering weavers, showcasing traditional textiles, and promoting sustainable fashion rooted in centuries-old practices.

This year’s grand celebration will take place at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, with President Droupadi Murmu gracing the event as Chief Guest. The programme features over 650 weavers, international buyers, and policymakers, with a series of exhibitions, awards, and demonstrations highlighting the strength and beauty of Indian handlooms.

Significance of Handlooms in Indian Culture and Economy:

India's handloom sector is one of the largest rural employment generators after agriculture, supporting over 35 lakh weavers. It not only provides livelihoods but preserves regional textile traditions such as Banarasi, Kanjeevaram, Chanderi, and Pochampally Ikat.

A majority of handloom workers are women, and the industry promotes eco-friendly production, using minimal electricity and chemical-free processes—making it central to India’s sustainable fashion journey.

National Handloom Day 2025 is more than a celebration—it's a recognition of the hands that weave India’s identity. With renewed focus, this year’s events will empower weavers and expand global reach.
