For state-employed contract teachers, the Bihar Education Department has created new guidelines. Now, the state's competency examination has been required for contractual teachers in the state. The new directive states that they will have to pass the competency examination in a maximum of three attempts else they will lose their jobs.
According to the news agency IANS, contractual teachers have the opportunity to transition into state government employees by submitting examination forms from February 1 to February 15, 2024. Admit cards will be issued on February 16, and the examination is scheduled to take place from February 26 to March 13, 2024.
There will be 150 multiple-choice questions on the computer-based test. The test syllabus will be the same as that of the Bihar Public Service Commission's Teachers' Recruitment Exam (TRE). Exam pass percentages expected are as follows: 40 per cent for general category candidates, 36.5 per cent for candidates from backward classes, 34 per cent for applicants from backward classes (annexure 1), and 32 per cent for candidates from scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, women, and candidates with disabilities, as per the media reports.

K.K. Pathak, Additional Chief Secretary, Education Department, released a notification on February 3, 2024, about this matter. Candidates must note that Pathak serves as the Chairman of the committee that the department established to oversee the competency examination. The committee's members are the director of secondary education, the chairman of the Bihar School Examination Board, and the director of primary education.
On December 26, 2023, the cabinet approved a plan to provide around 3.5 lakh contract teachers the status of government employees. It was also brought up in the cabinet meeting that contractual teachers must pass a competence exam to become employees of the state government.
