- SC to hear petitions on CBSE Gulf student assessment.
- Students challenge "unfair, discriminatory" Class 12 evaluation scheme.
- Plea seeks transparent method, special fresh examinations.
The Supreme Court will hear petitions on July 14, 2026, challenging the CBSE's assessment policy for Class 12 students in Gulf countries whose board examinations were cancelled due to the Iran-US conflict. A bench comprising Justice K. V. Viswanathan and Justice Alok Aradhe has issued notices to the Centre and the Central Board of Secondary Education, seeking their responses.
Appearing for the petitioners, advocate Raj Kishore Choudhary argued that students are dissatisfied with the assessment formula adopted by CBSE. The court directed that copies of the petitions be served on the office of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta before the next hearing.
CBSE Class 12 Assessment Row: Key Highlights
-The petitions have been filed by 30 regular Class 12 students, who have challenged the March 27, 2026 assessment scheme, claiming it is unfair and discriminatory.
-The Supreme Court has also sought responses to a separate petition filed by a private candidate challenging the June 21, 2026 evaluation policy for private students affected by the cancelled Gulf exams.
-The petitioners have requested the court to cancel or modify the existing assessment scheme, introduce a transparent and equitable evaluation method, conduct special fresh and improvement examinations, and allow students to retain the better of the two results.

CBSE's Assessment Formula:
Following the cancellation of Class 12 board examinations at Gulf centres, CBSE introduced separate evaluation policies for regular and private candidates. Under the revised formula, marks for cancelled subjects are calculated using:
40% weightage from Class 10 board examination marks.
60% weightage from the theory marks obtained in the Class 12 examinations that were successfully conducted.
While regular students could be evaluated using school-based records, CBSE introduced a separate policy for private candidates, who did not have internal assessment records.
The Supreme Court also heard a separate plea filed by a private candidate from Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, challenging CBSE's decision not to declare his Class 12 improvement examination result under the original assessment scheme. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on July 14, 2026.
