CBSE Announced Notification for Students: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has confirmed that those students who took Basic Mathematics (241) in their Class 10th can have an option to choose Mathematics (041) as a subject in their Class 11th. The Central Board of secondary education has introduced two levels of Mathematics for Class 10 students from the 2019-20 session — Basic and Standard — with the first exams conducted in March 2020.
Previously, those students who had opted for Basic Mathematics were not allowed to Applied Mathematics and could not choose Standard Mathematics to study. However, schools must ensure that students have all the necessary aptitude and capability to undertake the Standard Mathematics course.
However, due to COVID-19 restrictions and related difficulties, The Central Board of Secondary Education made an exception allowing Basic Math students to switch to the Standard Math course in Class 11. This exemption will continue for the academic session of 2025-26 as well. The Official notification released by the Central Board of Secondary Education urges students from the Class 10 batch of the 2024-25 academic session to make their subject choices wisely, as CBSE will not entertain any further changes once subjects are finalised in the List of Candidates.
The Central Board of Secondary Education mentioned in an official notice ‘Students who offered Mathematics Basic (241) are also allowed to offer Mathematics Standard (041) in class 11. Before permitting Mathematics Standard (041) in class 11 to such students, the head of the institution/school should satisfy that the students are having the aptitude and ability to pursue Mathematics Standard (041) in class 11.’
As per the official notification issued by the Board, this decision will remain in effect until the new scheme of studies is implemented, following the recommendations of the NCP-SE.
Check two levels of Mathematics:
1. Mathematics (Standard): This is designed for those students who intended to choose Mathematics for the senior secondary level education or beyond.
2. Mathematics (Basic): This is designed for those students who are not planning to pursue Mathematics at higher levels of education.
