In Chandigarh, the CBSE recruitment examination has sparked controversy after Sikh students were reportedly asked to remove their kara (a religious bracelet). Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, has strongly condemned the incident. He described the removal of the kara at the CBSE examination center at KB DAV School, Sector 7, Chandigarh, as deeply objectionable.
Advocate Dhami has urged the Deputy Commissioner of Chandigarh to take strict action against the officials responsible for offending the religious sentiments of Sikh candidates during the recruitment exam for the position of Administrative Head of CBSE, as reported by jagran.com.
Dhami reported that candidates informed him that officials at the examination center engaged in inappropriate actions by demanding the removal of their kara before entry, which he considers a violation of their rights. He emphasised that the kara is one of the five articles of faith for Sikhs, and forcibly removing it is an affront to their religious sentiments.
Dhami criticised the government for not taking Sikh religious concerns seriously during competitive examinations. He has called on the central and state governments, as well as examination agencies, commissions, and boards, to adopt a more respectful approach towards Sikh religious practices and prevent such incidents in the future.
He added that the Shiromani Committee officials have been instructed to gather complete details about the incident in Chandigarh, and appropriate action will be taken once the report is received.
